CA falls short on promises to students

Business

Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand has yet to fix its timetabling issues, leaving students distressed by later than expected completion dates.

Timetabling issues are again impacting the completion dates of students enrolled in the CA program, after a bungle in 2017 which saw 900 students impacted by a semester restructure.

In mid-February, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) told Accountants Daily a fix was in the works. However, this has not come to fruition, and students are proceeding under the assumption that their completion dates will be later than planned.

According to the current 2018 timetable, there is no Capstone subject available for students in term three, which is the final subject required to complete their CA.

This means some students who have otherwise completed their courses by the second half of 2018, can’t enroll in Capstone until January 2019, with final results issued in July and August 2019.

“You are told that completing the program will improve your position in the market as a candidate, and yet the finish dates can just be pushed out like this,” one student told Accountants Daily on condition of anonymity.

“This is affecting how much I can earn,” the student said.

Another student told Accountants Daily that while CA ANZ is responsive to student concerns, they are often given blanket statements or faced with a “one way street” for options.
