From term three of this year, CA ANZ plans to offer Capstone every term, which is the final course required to graduate.
This means students who are finishing their technical models in term two will be able to complete the program this year. Under the current timetable, those students will have to wait until next year for completion, which has been eight months later than anticipated for some candidates.
The proposal is being prepared for submission to CA ANZ’s education board next month, and is anticipated to be passed and resolved in about an eight-week period.
CA ANZ’s general manager for education delivery, Stephen Carpenter, said enrolment and result release dates will line up appropriately, so students who pass and complete the relevant subjects this year will not be adversely affected by any hold-ups at the board level.
“We are fully understanding of the frustrations that students have. It’s not okay that they would have to wait that long. This term three is a permanent solution,” Mr Carpenter told Accountants Daily.
“We run a very large scale program, we put close to 7,000 students per term through our CA Program. That is larger than many university faculties. We also have multifaceted stakeholder groups that we must consider, and we work within a highly regulated environment as a higher education provider,” Mr Carpenter said.
“So, it takes a bit of time to go through a solution and put that through all the formal processes. It’s not something we are delaying, it requires a lot of work to put a solution in place to solve the problem this year and beyond,” he added.
The issues in 2017 and now in 2018 are triggered by an overhaul of the CA Program’s timetable, which switched from semesters to trimesters. Last year’s fix of a supplementary term was a “backstop” measure, Mr Carpenter said, which required manual processing of affected students.
Students who are still able to access the “backstop” measure have been contacted by CA ANZ. Others should wait to receive an email from the association informing them of the new timetabling fix.
Those students who are still concerned about their finish dates should get in touch with CA ANZ’s education division, specifically Mr Carpenter.
CA ANZ signalled reformation of its CA Program earlier this week, in an address to members from chief executive Rick Ellis. Entry points and content accessibility are set to be changed, as part of a broader organisational rethink.
Accountants Daily has spoken to some affected students this morning who believe their completion dates will be timely and fair under this new system.
