WA opens second-round grants for small business

Business

The Western Australian government will offer $3,000 grant payments to small businesses across the industries most affected across Perth, Peel and regional Western Australia.

The payments will be offered as second-round support boosters as part of the $3,000 small business lockdown assistance grants offered by Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan on 9 July.

To be eligible for the second round of payments, businesses must be located within Western Australia and have an annual turnover of at least $75,000 and be registered for GST. Eligible applicants must also have a valid and active ABN and a nationwide payroll of less than $4 million for the 2019–20 financial year.

Businesses must also have suffered a financial loss as a direct result of the lockdown period, whether by way of defunct perishable goods or the impacts of costs associated with cancelled bookings. Alternatively, the support will be available to those who have suffered a reduction in turnover of at least 30 per cent, compared with the week prior.

According to the Small Business Development Corporation department of the Western Australian government, business owners must be able prove that their core business operations fall into one of the sectors severely impacted by the state’s most recent snap lockdown.

The eligible industries include hospitality venues spanning cafés, clubs and pubs; retailers; tourism; sport and recreation; the creative and performing arts; and select miscellaneous businesses, including cinemas, food wholesalers and equipment rental.

The industry eligibility changes for those in regional Western Australia, though, where the miscellaneous venues listed above are not eligible.

Announcing the support mechanism earlier in the month, Mr McGowan said the state government’s management of COVID-19 has so far “kept Western Australians safe” and contributed to one of the “strongest economies in the world”.

“There is no doubt that the strong and necessary restrictions introduced to protect Western Australians during lockdown have required some small businesses to make significant sacrifices,” Mr McGowan said.

“In recognition of these sacrifices, the state government will provide $3,000 grants to deliver cash flow support to eligible businesses impacted by… lockdown and interim restrictions.”

Small Business Minister Reece Whitby said the McGowan government recognises the impacts that lockdown restrictions can have beyond the bounds of the state’s major cities.

“Expanding the grants program into regional Western Australia will provide a helping hand for eligible businesses outside Perth and Peel who lost bookings as a result of lockdown,” Mr Whitby said.

“The restrictions, while difficult, were necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19 and avoid a longer lockdown which would have had a devastating impact on the economy.

“The COVID-19 threat is constantly evolving, and I would like to thank small businesses right across the state for their understanding as we tackle the challenges together.”
