Given the ever-changing nature of government stimulus & restrictions which often includes last-minute changes to deadlines and time-bound grant applications, accountants like you, play a critical role in ensuring their clients avail themselves of all support that’s on offer.
It’s incredibly important to take time and consider whether you are; a) engaged for the work you are undertaking for the client, and b) realistic about getting paid for the additional work you are undertaking.
In times of uncertainty, when you’re working overtime to ensure your clients are set up for success, the engagement process can be overlooked - however, it’s now more important than ever to ensure you’re properly engaged for all additional client work you are undertaking. In the result of a dispute, the Tax Practitioners Board strongly recommended an updated engagement letter whenever there is a change to the scope of services provided to the client. Recommendations can be found in their latest practice note surrounding engagement letters (PN 3/2019).
We often hear that scope creep is a challenge for accounting firms, but even more so given the unpredictable nature of work surrounding stimulus and COVID-relief measures.
