EY Australia has selected the chairman and co-founder of Chemist Warehouse, Jack Gance, as its entrepreneur of the year to represent Australia at the world awards in Monaco in June.

Chair of judges and founder of Greencross, the largest network of veterinary practices in Australia, Glen Richards said Mr Gance was a standout nominee.

“The judges were unanimous in our decision that Jack Gance is an iconic and serial entrepreneur whom we are proud to put on the world stage of entrepreneurship,” said Dr Richards.

“From the beginning, the Chemist Warehouse journey has always been focused on adding value to Australian households by providing a wide range of health, beauty and wellness products at the best possible prices for their customers.

“Under Jack’s leadership, the Chemist Warehouse team has delivered excellence in merchandising, continual innovation with their evolving pharmacy and retail business model, and provided outstanding value to millions of households across Australia by helping make healthcare affordable.”

Mr Gance developed the pharmacy chain after opening his first one in 1972. He built the My Chemist Pharmacy chain that evolved into Chemist Warehouse in 2000, with the business expanding into growing markets ever since.

Australian leader of EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year Justin Howse said Mr Gance was being recognised for his trailblazing work.

“Jack is a disruptive pioneer. His focus on the customer and drive to provide Australians with access to affordable, discounted prescriptions are evident throughout his career and came through in his presentation,” said Mr Howse.

“Jack had a vision for the future of Australian pharmacies, and brought this vision to life through passion, persistence, drive and dedication.

“Chemist Warehouse, with Jack’s leadership, revolutionised the Australian pharmacy landscape and took the industry by storm globally.”

Mr Gance was picked as the winner out of a group of seven finalists from around Australia, they included:

  • Claire Wittwer-Smith — founder and executive director of My Plan Manager
  • Marcella Romero — founder and CEO of Arriba Group
  • John Winning — CEO of Winning Group
  • Andrew Barnes and Chris Eigeland — co-CEO and co-founders of Go1
  • Doug Brooks — CEO of Brooks Hire
  • Sean Senvirtne — CEO of MyDeal.com.au

Launched in 2001, the Australian EY Entrepreneur of the Year aims to identify, acknowledge, and celebrate the contribution entrepreneurs make to the business community and economy.
