CPA Australia has announced it will provide small business owners with a disaster recovery toolkit to help them get back on their feet after a major disaster.

The toolkit provides a comprehensive guide and check-list for business owners that find themselves in uncharted territory following an unforeseen disaster.
Announcing the toolkit, CPA Australia chief executive Alex Malley says it is important for businesses to know that they can access this free resource in tough times.

“Small businesses are often an integral component of the local communities they serve, and so getting them back on their feet quickly is important,” he said.
“Australia is no stranger to extreme events – such as drought, bush fires, floods and cyclones – and the evidence suggests these are only likely to become more frequent and more intense in the future. Yet our experience shows that many small to medium-sized businesses do not have a disaster recovery plan.”
Supporting small businesses in tough times is important since a major disaster can disrupt and alter the markets in which small businesses operate and have a significant impact on local employment, Mr Malley said.
He explained that the toolkit has been designed to allow small businesses affected by disaster to come back stronger than ever.
“It’s not just about recovery – the toolkit can also be used to help businesses adjust and identify opportunities that they may want to explore, but have yet to attempt".
The free resource includes:
• a checklist for reopening a business after a disaster
• cash flow forecasting following a disaster
• reconstructing records following a disaster
• information covering natural disasters and their accounting implications, and
• a podcast covering ‘disaster recovery tips'
