Small business to pass on fuel costs

Business

The increase in fuel excise through the re-introduction of indexation will impact businesses across a wide range of industries, including retailers, says Pitcher partners.

By Michael Masterman 7 minute read

Pitcher Partners partner Craig Whatman said businesses affected by the increase in the fuel excise will want to pass it on directly to the consumer if they cannot recover the increased cost through the Fuel Tax Credits system.

“The question will be whether those businesses run by our clients will have to absorb some or all of the increased cost of fuel or whether they can pass it on,” he said.

“Business will be keen to pass this cost on to their customers as far as possible, but obviously for those businesses that operate in a competitive marketplace on low margins, they may not be able to simply increase their prices to cover the additional fuel cost," said Mr Whatman.

The decision will be made on an industry-by-industry and sector-by-sector basis, he said.
