Of the new leaders, 12 have been promoted from within while John Dowell has joined from global corporate advisory firm the Snowball Group, Dominic Moon from boutique law firm Clearly Hoare and Johannnes Venter from Deloitte, where he was previously a partner.
Speaking to AccountantsDaily, Crowe Horwath’s chief operating officer Chris Shay put the lateral hires down to the firm’s somewhat unique offering and wide geographical footprint.
“What we find is that we operate a slightly different model.”
Crowe Horwath looks for talent, and doesn’t restrict itself when recruiting, he said.
“If we feel there is an opportunity for someone to accelerate their progression in any of our locations we make sure that we offer those opportunities to our internal candidates as well as the external market,” Mr Shay explained.
Mr Venter, who has joined the firm from Deloitte, has moved to a regional office in northern NSW.
Often professionals see that their opportunity to progress is being hampered where they are, said Mr Shay.
“Good people are potentially sitting in a long line of people who are blocking them furthering their aspirations and are looking for an opportunity to get out from under that shadow and chart their own path; we are seeing a bit of that,” he said.
Crowe Horwath also runs a defined development process for internal staff to prepare them for leadership roles, something Mr Shay says they do better than most.
“We ensure that people are ready to progress.”
"They're not just anointed as a leader, there is a lot of learning they go through and a lot of self-development to help them be much much more successful through the progression," Mr Shay said.
“I think our focus on people progression is better than most, I think we have a really honest type of environment with the way that people progress but it’s an extremely developmentally focused environment, it’s not an environment that is sink or swim, it’s very much focused on making sure people are ready and get the feedback they need to be good leaders,” Mr Shay said.
