Govt advertises small business ombudsman position

Business

The Minister for Small Business, Bruce Billson, has announced that the appointment process for the first small business and family enterprise ombudsman is now underway.

By Staff Reporter 8 minute read

“Establishing the Ombudsman was a key 2013 election commitment, and I am delighted to announce that, following today’s advertising of the Ombudsman position, we are one step closer to fulfilling this promise to the small businesses and family enterprises of Australia,” Mr Billson said.

He noted that the ombudsman will operate in a statutory role, equipped with legislated functions and powers and granted a “real capability to deliver benefit for small business”.

Criteria for the position – with applicants assessed using an open, merit-based process – have now been advertised by Treasury.

“I encourage interested persons with relevant qualifications and experience to apply for this position,” the minister said. “The Ombudsman will be a:

• Commonwealth-wide advocate for small businesses and family enterprises;
• Concierge for dispute resolution; and
• Contributor to the development of small business-friendly Commonwealth laws and regulations.”

“The Ombudsman will also offer its own, outsourced alternative dispute resolution service”, Mr Billson added.
