Sarah Magarey has been appointed to the newly-created role of general manager and will lead the firm’s 22 businesses and 158 staff across 16 locations.
Ms Magarey is the first woman to lead the firm in its 25-year history.
Chan & Naylor director Ken Raiss described Ms Magarey as a "perfect fit" for the firm, saying she brings to Chan & Naylor “a wealth of local and international experience spanning professional services, publishing and global compliance and reporting to the organisation”.
“Her illustrious professional services experience, most notably with Ernst & Young, has included leadership roles across a breadth of portfolios with significant expertise in Australia, London and the broader Asia-Pacific region. This experience will build on the knowledge and culture that has been established over Chan & Naylor’s two decades in the business,” Mr Raiss said.
Ms Magarey said she is excited by the challenges and opportunities that the move from Ernst & Young to a mid-tier firm will present.
“I’ve always worked in the big end of town, so I relished the idea of leading a smaller firm that is really focused on client outcomes, where I could roll up my sleeves and get things done across the breadth of the business,” Ms Magarey said.
“Chan & Naylor is full of talented, dedicated people, teaming to solve problems in a creative and innovative way while delivering excellent service to build that trusted adviser relationship. That positions us well to serve clients who need support in important areas of their lives such as ensuring their hard work builds value for their future and that of their families.”
Ms Magarey said she looks forward to working with the firm’s clients and joint venture partners under Chan & Naylor’s innovative business model.
“It’s now 10 years since Chan & Naylor shook up the accountancy industry by introducing a new way for accountants to plan management succession strategies and determine their own personal exit from their business, on their terms and without the need to pull completely away from their highly valued and trusted businesses,” she said.
“This model, which we call the Joint Venture Partnership Program, has seen extraordinary growth since its introduction and with the wave of baby boomers keen to step away from their business and transition to retirement now fast approaching, we know there will be a very busy and exciting time ahead.
“I look forward to introducing more of Australia’s leading accountants to Chan & Naylor’s unique, and proven, way of thinking,” Ms Magarey said.
