Despite a period of uncertainty, the government has sought to retain the Commission, satisfying the numerous stakeholders who had voiced their demands for government commitment to providing a regulatory model for the not-for-profit sector.
“We have always maintained that a national not-for-profit regulator has the best capacity to bring efficiencies and stability to the sector,” said Dr Michael Fraser, CAANZ head of reporting.

“A decision to abolish the ACNC would have seen the replication of legislation and regulation across separate states, placing further strain and burden on providers of key services across the nation,” he added.
According to Dr Fraser, the government decision will provide much needed certainty to community organisations, enabling them to use their time and resources towards their causes and services.
“This decision means that the most efficient, and arguably effective, regulation will come in the form of a consistent and cogent reporting framework for charities and other not-for-profits through the ACNC, and we look forward to continuing our work with them,” he concluded.
