Mid-tier bullish a year on from key partnership

Business

A year on from a significant merger, one mid-tier has said a focus away from the traps of "pillage" and self-serving has primed the firm for growth in the new year.

Pitcher Partners and Moore Stephens merged their Sydney practices in November 2015 and have since been operating as Pitcher Partners Sydney.

Pitcher Partners Sydney managing partner Rob Southwell recently spoke to Accountants Daily about how a true accounting firm partnership should operate.

“The core notion of the true partnership is that you serve the partnership, the partnership doesn't serve you, as opposed to some models I’ve seen where some partners treat it as ‘How can I pillage this while I’m here?’,” Mr Southwell said.

“It’s about serving the greater good rather than the individual needs. Focus on the collective and we'll all be stronger for it,” he said.

Mr Southwell said the merger gave the firms an opportunity to realign their partnership to this model.

“It's been a big focus back onto the partnership, because the core of what we're trying to do is for all the partners to work collectively, to be as diagnostic [as possible] about what the clients want and bringing in the right people to help the client with that need,” he said.

“Then we've had to align everything to that, so our core objectives, the way we work together, getting away from very small silos around individual partner performances and focusing on what's right for the client and for us to be able to provide as much as we can internally.”

“By doing that it's a little bit of a slow burn to begin with, but long-term the idea is that if we want to make money then let's all make money together.”
