Accounting firms need to better integrate their temporary and contract employees into the working environment, as the company’s benefits are “greatly increased” by doing so, according to recruitment agency Hays.

Hays regional director David Cawley said that while temporary/contract employees may not have the same benefits as permanent staff members, accounting firms need to “equally” integrate all staff members to maximise employee productivity.

“Organisations that have got a better way of integrating temps into their businesses are making them feel like they’re part of the team, rather than being the person who sits in the corner who’s just there for a couple of weeks,” Mr Cawley said.
“That includes things like culture of the company, social activities, team bonding [and] the flexible working options that comes with the sort of work that temps are normally engaged to deliver.”
Mr Cawley said that as employees are increasingly looking for more flexible working conditions, accounting firms need to know how to effectively integrate short-term employees if they want to retain staff.
“More and more candidates are looking to go down the temp/contact route versus permanent, whether it be [because of] travel, whether it be location, whether it be [employees] wanting to sample lots of different organisations. Certainly that appetite is only going to grow,” Mr Cawley said.
Firms should also be wary of boosting their reputation through employee recommendations, as Mr Cawley said employees are increasingly taking to websites to write about their working experiences.

“As an employer, clearly you would want the best possible feedback about the experiences of somebody working in the organisation to be out there on the world wide web and accessible by any other prospective candidate in the future,” Mr Cawley said.
“So thinking about how you integrate candidates into your workforce and how you build that ... that feedback is really positive and is only going to benefit you in the long run.”
