Brad Seeto, founder and director CEO of boutique accounting firm Bramelle Partners, reflects on his career and the accounting industry

How did you start down this career path?

When school was finishing, I wanted to start work straight away. Accounting was one of the few industries where you could work straight away and study at the same time. So I chose a career in accounting.

What inspires you in your role/industry? Why?

My biggest inspiration is being able to make a positive change in our client’s lives. There’s nothing better than being there from the start and helping a client on building a successful business. Being part of that journey and knowing you contributed is pretty cool.

What's your approach to customer service that separates you from the rest?

We live in an instant society today where everything is available at one’s fingertips. You would be pretty naive to think a client hasn’t tried researching something themselves before calling you, so when they contact you they are hoping you are able to solve the issue for them in as efficiently and effective as possible. You need to be up to date on your technical knowledge, be accessible and be able to research quickly. Client’s aren’t waiting around for weeks waiting around for your answer. If you haven’t provided a response, they have usually made a decision rightly or wrongly.

How do you innovate and stay ahead of industry trends?

Researching and reading online about current and future trends. The startup space is something we have a fair bit of experience in and by being in this space we are exposed to the latest industry trends. We also see if we can apply any new technology or trends to help our own business grow.

What is the toughest challenge you've faced in your role? How did you overcome it?

The toughest challenge without a doubt is finding good quality staff. There are so many competing resources for an individual’s time and attention and frankly most people don’t have jobs as their high priority. We have one of the most attractive employee policies on the market which include remuneration based on profit share, employee share scheme, potential for a four day working week and additional paid days to pursue ESG interests, but to receive these benefits you need to deliver results. You would think this will help us attract staff, but most people just want the benefits without the results. This is the same approach we take with out clients where we deliver our outcomes and they decide to continue with us. If you can’t deliver the results then you will only realise the benefits short term.

We have overcome this by trying to ensure that every hire is a fit for us. This means we take a long time to hire the correct candidate. We also are hiring offshore to provide us with support and baseload capacity for undertaking accounting work. We have invested a lot of resources into making the correct outcomes are delivered.

What are some of your goals for the next 5 years?

Our goals would be to continue to hire the correct talent to bring this company forward and continue to provide our clients with exceptional service. If we do this, then everything else will fall into place.
