CPA Australia defends controversial AGM location decision

CPA Australia has defended its decision to hold its 2017 annual general meeting in Singapore, which a PwC partner labelled a ‘farce’.

Last week, CPA Australia announced to its members via email that its 2017 annual general meeting (AGM) will be held in Singapore on 27 April.

PwC Sydney managing partner Joseph Carrozzi quickly took to Twitter, labelling the decision a ‘farce’.

“This farce impacts the reputation of all bean counters,” Mr Carrozzi’s tweet said.

A CPA Australia spokesperson told Accountants Daily that the decision to hold this year’s AGM in Singapore is a nod to the organisation's history in Asia, which extends back to 1954.

“An important part of CPA Australia’s heritage and success is our long history in Asia,” the spokesperson said.

“We currently have close to 30 per cent of our membership that resides outside Australia, including more than 37,000 members who live and work in Asia.”

While this is positive for CPA Australia’s Asia-based members, the remaining more than 70 per cent of members based in Australia will either have to fly to Singapore to attend or tune in via live stream.

“Given this is our first time in Singapore, we are expecting strong attendance from members in Singapore, Malaysia and across the region,” the spokesperson said.

“Additionally, for the first time we will be live streaming the AGM this year which will allow all members, no matter where they live in the world, the opportunity to access the proceedings.”

Members tuning in via live stream won’t be able to actively participate in real time, and rather will have to put forward any questions in advance.

“Members who are unable to attend the Annual General Meeting and would like to ask questions of the Board concerning matters to be considered at the Annual General Meeting, are invited to do so by completing the form on the reverse of the proxy form included with the 2017 Notice of Annual General Meeting,” the spokesperson said.

A full notice of the meeting will be distributed to members next week, as well as the 2016 Annual Report.
