Big win for CPA rebel members ahead of AGM

Regulation

The CPA Australia member leading a rebellion against the association has welcomed a significant next step in his plight to drive change at the top level, and is currently mulling a new campaign to challenge leadership tenures.

NSW-based accountant and CPA Australia member Brett Stevenson is voluntarily leading a group of members who are seeking increased transparency and a shake-up of the association’s corporate governance.

As per what is permitted under the Corporations Act, Mr Stevenson requested a copy of CPA Australia’s register of members, including contact details.

After paying $2351.16 - which he and other disgruntled members financed - Mr Stevenson told Accountants Daily he received the register yesterday, though he was frustrated it did not come complete with email addresses.

“A nuisance, but it certainly won't stop us,” he said.

It is Mr Stevenson’s understanding that he is permitted to contact members strictly to discuss issues related to their membership with CPA Australia, which he plans to do.

This comes ahead of CPA Australia’s annual general meeting (AGM) set to be held tonight in Singapore. It will be aired via CPA Australia’s website at 7.30pm AEST.

There was significant backlash to CPA Australia’s decision to hold the AGM overseas, and the association was criticised for potentially side-stepping the criticism and backlash swelling on the domestic front.

CPA Australia gave members the opportunity to put questions to the board at the AGM.

“Your questions are important to us,” the association said in its notice about the meeting. “Although we will not be able to reply to each question individually, we will respond to as many of the frequently asked questions as possible.”

Mr Stevenson also said he is mulling putting forward a special resolution which seeks to shorten the length of directors’ tenures from nine years to six years.

“By reducing the terms to six years, it will force some more changes on the board,” Mr Stevenson said.

Mr Stevenson is currently using a mailing list he has gathered of CPA members to communicate these thoughts and actions to members, as well as an online forum which has started as a backlash to the ‘Find a CPA’ service being disabled.
