Bookkeepers in ‘strong’ salary position

Regulation

Strong economies on the east coast in particular combined with a buoyant SME market in Australia for the second half of 2017 means bookkeepers are in the driver’s seat for salary negotiation.

Earlier this year, The Bookkeeper reported that in the 12 months to June, there has been a sizeable growth in the salaries of bookkeepers, particularly those based in Sydney, with a 10 per cent jump in a number of cases.

Bookkeepers will continue to have the market on their side for the second half of 2017, according to recruitment firm Hays.

This is largely due to the strong economic growth in key capital cities, like Sydney, which is encouraging start up and expansion for SMEs.

“What we are seeing is that those companies are rising very, very quickly and don't necessarily have large budgets to employ or need large teams,” regional director for accountancy and finance at Hays, David Cawley, told The Bookkeeper.

“What we have seen is bookkeepers that can support those growing organisations play a role where they can offer experience and support to maybe an entrepreneur or an individual who doesn't necessarily have a finance background,” he said.

“We're seeing that they can support them and they can help them with where they're trying to get their business to, but clearly, if they understand their worth, they can also negotiate a strong salary.”
