CPA rebel leader winds up his fight

For several months, and particularly since CPA Australia announced its annual general meeting would be held in Singapore, Brett Stevenson has actively petitioned for change in the association’s corporate governance. During this time, he said he raised a total of $34,175 from disgruntled CPA members to fund legal advice, travel, and petitioning associated with his efforts.

With the leadership team that existed during the reign of ex-CEO Alex Malley set to be gone by 31 December, and a new board now elected, Mr Stevenson will be using the remainder of the “fighting fund” monies to cover costs incurred, which will largely be for legal advice.
He estimates there will be $10,000 left over, which will be given to the Royal Flying Doctor Service or members who contributed can request a portion of their donation is refunded. The fund will be audited and a breakdown of costs will be supplied to his mailing list of CPA members.
In a parting email to his mailing list, Mr Stevenson said “victory is still uncertain” despite significant change at CPA Australia.
“One thing that is mandatory is that firm action is taken. And by firm action, I don’t mean the obvious easy actions such as the recommendations of the Independent Review Panel,” he said.
“What is needed is actions where it really matters to show the new board is fair dinkum — actions that show you want to make sure those responsible for this appalling past (leadership and staff) are held to account in some way,” he said.
