The tax office and the Tax Practitioners Board have contacted taxpayers as part of their compliance surveillance, encouraging them to dob in BAS agents who they suspect are not appropriately registered.
TPB, ATO encourage clients to dob in dodgy BAS agents

In line with regulators’ campaigning to ensure on-time registration of tax and BAS agents, the ATO this week told a database of taxpayers that they are potentially putting their business at risk by engaging with an unregistered agent.
The primary registration issues so far this year have been with tax (financial) advisers. BAS agents in particular have been largely compliant with their registration this year and in the years since compulsory registration began in 2010.

The TPB has sung the praises of the BAS agent population to The Bookkeeper.
“Historically this was an unregulated profession, and there was no requirement prior to 2010 for these people to be registered. So having gone through that transition from an unregulated environment to now having all these BAS agents registered with and regulated by the board, that’s a much better place to be in than we were seven years ago,” said Ian Taylor, chair of the Tax Practitioners Board.
“BAS agents, throughout that process, have towed the line and done everything that has been asked of them,” he added.
