This week, AAT chief executive Rochelle Park announced a partnership with AB Phillips to provide both members and non-members access to specialist HR advice through a dedicated telephone and email service operated by the team at AB Phillips.
Speaking to The Bookkeeper, Ms Park said the partnership comes off the back of increased scrutiny of HR and payroll services as well as demand from bookkeepers looking to bolster their capabilities.
“Australia has extremely complicated industrial laws and provisions around the Fair Work Act and modern awards can actually only be determined by a magistrate in the Federal Court, so you can see that it is a significantly complicated area. Therefore, for HR intermediaries or bookkeepers who are providing payroll services, it is quite important to connect with qualified and experienced advice,” said Ms Park.
“[This partnership will help] when they are connecting the dots for their business owners, that they are not stepping outside the scope of what their skills and knowledge and qualifications can actually handle, so it is a peace of mind for everyone.”
Ms Park also praised the new Diploma of Payroll Services, released by the Department of Education and Training earlier this year, as an important piece in helping address the gap in payroll training.
“It is really exciting to have the Diploma of Payroll Services rolled out this year in acknowledgement of that complexity in the industrial laws,” said Ms Park.
“That qualification does not aim to suggest that the individual bookkeeper is the HR expert but rather have the background knowledge to act as an HR intermediary working with small business owners and their HR experts that they engage with.”
