BAS agents told to hold off on AUSkey transition

myGovID will be a new digital identity provider that utilises the security features on a user’s device, such as fingerprint or face detection, allowing the user to access government online services.
Speaking to The Bookkeeper, Institute of Certified Bookkeepers executive chair Matthew Addison said that while the industry is about nine months away from making the mandated transition to myGovID, it is still too early for agents to jump across.
“It is a soft launch beta, they are not demanding that anybody go there, no other system is being turned off. Every software developer releases beta so that people will play with it, break it and see what has to be improved,” said Mr Addison.
“There are some practical implementations of this better security system that still needs to be fully worked through such as the offshore worker, such as those who are not allowed to have their mobile phone in the workplace.
“They are on the table and the government is aware of them which is why I'm saying today is too early to jump onto the system. They are being developed but we just need to wait until they are ready to use.”

Instead, Mr Addison suggests agents revisit the issue in the final quarter of the year.
“While BAS agents could start the process today for familiarisation, I would be holding off for now. I would position that everybody's approach should be to get over the single touch payroll hurdle to 30 September and then think about the AUSkey to myGovID transition in the latter quarter of the year,” he said.
“My key message is that at this point in time, I would be waiting.”
