ATO set to issue STP client list

Regulation

Tax and BAS agents will soon be receiving a client list from the ATO detailing their Single Touch Payroll status, as the Tax Office continues to facilitate compliance.

By Reporter 8 minute read

Single Touch Payroll is now in force for businesses of all sizes, with 460,000 businesses now reporting, and over 40,000 covered by a deferral, exemption or concessional reporting arrangement.

Over the next few weeks, tax and BAS agents can expect the ATO to provide them with a list of their clients’ STP status.

The list will include employer clients who are yet to transition, who have applied for or have been granted a deferral or exemption, or who have opted for a concessional reporting option.

Despite the passing of the 30 September reporting deadline, small businesses will still be allowed to apply for deferrals, exemptions or concessional reporting.

“If you’ve lodged an application on behalf of your clients for additional time to start reporting, it can take up to 28 days to process,” the ATO said in an online update.

“During peak periods, processing time frames may extend beyond this. You do not need to resubmit your request — we will contact you if we need any further information.”

The ATO will also begin contacting employers directly, with further nudges set to follow from February to May 2020.

There will be no penalties for mistakes, missed or late reports for the 2019–20 financial year for employers with 19 or fewer employees, with the full penalty regime set to come into effect from 1 July 2020.
