Key dates ahead of the ATO’s annual closure

The ATO has announced its annual closure period over the year-end festive season for 2020.

The ATO’s offices will close for the festive season at midday on Thursday, 24 December 2020, and reopen on Monday, 4 January 2021.

Its technical help desk will be available on 29 and 30 December between 7am and 6pm AEDT, and on 31 December from 7am to 1pm AEDT.

Online services for agents and the Practitioner Lodgement Service will be available outside scheduled maintenance work.

The Tax Office has also advised that returns or activity statements lodged on or after 14 December are less likely to be finalised before its annual closure.

Lodgement program deferral requests processed after 14 December may not display on a client’s record until the new year.

The last tax return status email that reports the actions the ATO are taking when processing clients’ tax returns have been sent on 16 December, with these emails to resume of 6 January.

On the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House front, all super guarantee payments made after 14 December will be processed from 4 January 2021. The next SG quarterly payments are due on 28 January 2021.

JobKeeper dates

The second extension period for JobKeeper starts from 4 January 2021, reducing payment rates to $1,000 per fortnight for those on the tier 1 rate and $650 per fortnight for those on tier 2.

The new decline in turnover form, to prove that an entity’s actual GST turnover has declined in the December 2020 quarter relative to a comparison period, will be made available from 4 January 2021.

Completion of the December business monthly declaration, for employers to be reimbursed for payments between 23 November 2020 and 3 January 2021, has been extended from the usual 14th of each month to 28 January 2021.

Employers will also be given until 31 January 2021 to meet the wage condition for fortnights starting on 4 January and 18 January 2021.
