CPA Australia has created a new course that offers members the option to become qualified in financial planning under ASIC’s RG 146 requirement.

The new course, which is known as Financial Planning Fundamentals, comprises of four subjects and is for people looking to offer financial planning services as well as achieve CPA status.

CPA Australia chief executive Alex Malley told Accountants Daily that they created the new course for the same reasons they established CPA Australia Advice in July 2016, to try to change the nature of the offering in the market.
“Our first step was the establishment of CPA Australia Advice and the next step in the evolution is the creation of these subjects to provide a pathway for our members who wish to pursue a career providing quality, comprehensive financial advice to their clients,” Mr Malley said.
He said that as the industry continues to change, CPA Australia will seek to accommodate new needs of its members.
“As our public practice members are adapting to new regulatory and market needs, we see many members in public practice seeking to become licensed to broaden the services they offer to include financial planning.
“This new offer supports both our current and future members to be equipped to continue to add value to their clients now and into the future.”
Those who complete the course will meet the knowledge requirements as set by ASIC in RG146 to provide financial advice to clients.
The four subjects in the course are financial planning fundamentals, superannuation and retirement planning, investment strategies, and personal risk management and financial plan construct.
“It provides a pathway to a career in financial advice, which complements the services and skills our members can offer to their clients,” Mr Malley said.
