Allegations of stolen tax refunds prompt tax agents’ rego termination

Tax

Two tax agents have had their registrations terminated after a host of complaints about missing client refunds.

QTR Accountants Pty Ltd and Nicoh Group Pty Ltd have had their registration terminated, following a joint investigation by the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) and the ATO.

The TPB received 19 consumer complaints that the registered tax agents, who offered their services online, had not passed on 2017–18 tax refunds to their clients.

During a subsequent investigation, the TPB received about 200 consumer complaints from a range of sources.

“Tax practitioners must meet strict standards of fitness and propriety to register with the TPB, and we expect that they will continue to meet these standards,” said chair of the TPB, Ian Taylor.

‘It is extremely disappointing that registered tax practitioners showed such disregard for the professional and ethical standards we aim to uphold.’

The matter is also being pursued by the police in Western Australia.
