ATO flags penalties for overdue TPAR lodgements

Tax

The ATO will apply penalties to clients who have not lodged their Taxable payments annual report on time.

The Taxable payments annual report must be lodged by 28 August each year. For clients who make payments to contractors, they may need to report these payments in a TPAR.

“If your clients have overdue TPARs, lodge them now,” the ATO said.

“From 23 March 2022, we will apply failure to lodge penalties to those who did not lodge their 2021 or prior year TPAR.”

This also applies to clients who have already been sent three non-lodgement letters about their overdue TPAR and do not respond to the ATO’s follow-up phone call about their overdue TPAR.

“In the coming weeks, we may phone you or your clients about their overdue TPAR, to follow up the non-lodgement letters we sent,” the ATO warned.

The ATO urged practitioners to remind their clients they may face penalties for an overdue TPAR and if necessary, lodge a TPAR by 28 August each year. Clients should also maintain good records that can make the TPAR preparation easier.

“Our website has information to help you and your clients understand who needs to lodge a TPAR, and how to prepare, record and report,” the ATO said.

“We understand sometimes individual circumstances make meeting tax obligations difficult, so please contact us if you or your clients need support.”
