ATO issues practice inbox reminder for tax professionals

Tax

The Tax Office has reminded tax professionals to check their practice inbox, as well as their assigned inbox.

The ATO has served a notice to all tax agents and professionals that it is important to stay on top of their practice mailbox, in case of important messages.

Practice mail in Online services for agents allows and facilitates communication between the ATO and tax professionals via a secure email channel.

The channel allows messages to be exchanged between professionals and the Tax Office securely and privately, where all communication can be viewed, deleted and allocated.

“We have found a significant number of tax professionals are only checking their assigned inbox, not their practice inbox,” the ATO said.

“Make sure you set up email notifications for your own mailbox and the practice mailbox to alert you when you receive practice mail messages from us.”

It was also noted it was crucial to check practice mailboxes as professionals may have access to more than one mailbox, so all needed to be checked and up-to-date to ensure no vital communication or information was being missed.

The ATO said it was now utilising practice mail as a communication pathway more often after it being historically done via the individual mailbox.

“Emails are often restricted in size and content, and you should regularly check your inbox for the latest messages from us.”

“If you are not checking your practice mail ‘inbox’ and your assigned mailbox you may be missing important messages in respect of your clients.”
